An Indonesia business idea: help small retailers run their online operations

A practical way to test a service business around product catalogues, order handling and stock records before committing to a larger operation.

Start with a recurring problem

A retailer may already sell online yet still struggle to keep product information, orders and stock records consistent. A service that takes responsibility for one of those tasks is a business idea worth investigating in Indonesia. This article develops a concept to test; it is not an available business for sale or a verified investment opportunity. The starting question is specific: which recurring task would a particular retailer pay someone else to do reliably?

Use the national picture to frame local questions

In August 2026, Bank Indonesia described digital adoption by micro, small and medium enterprises as a priority, including e-commerce onboarding and stronger financial recording through SIAPIK. That gives useful context for exploring operational support services. It does not establish demand for a new agency in your chosen neighbourhood. Our interpretation is to investigate the work that happens after a retailer opens an online storefront: keeping it accurate, responding to orders and organising the records.

Choose one customer group and one deliverable

For example, explore catalogue maintenance for independent homeware retailers in one city. Define the proposed deliverable: updating approved product descriptions, prices and stock status on the retailer’s existing sales channels. Alternatively, investigate order administration or stock-record reconciliation, but assess each service separately. Interview prospective customers about their current process, the mistakes that cost them time and who would approve spending. Ask for examples of the workflow with personal customer details removed. Interest in the idea is useful; willingness to accept a clear scope and price is stronger evidence.

Read the data at the right level

BPS’s E-Commerce Statistics 2024 publication covers business profiles, workers, activities and transaction values, with estimates presented at provincial level. It was published in November 2025 and describes 2024 activity. Use it to understand the market’s structure, then research the customer group you actually intend to serve. Provincial estimates cannot tell you how many nearby retailers need your service, what they will pay or whether an established provider already serves them well.

Design a pilot you can measure

Before offering paid work, have the proposed activity and operating arrangements checked for your circumstances. Then agree a limited pilot with a defined number of products or tasks, an approval process and a finish date. Record time spent on setup, routine delivery, corrections and support. Track an outcome the service can influence, such as catalogue accuracy or order-processing time. Avoid promising sales growth when demand, advertising and pricing remain outside your control. Agree access permissions and keep the retailer in control of its accounts.

Price the work you actually have to deliver

Build the cost estimate from observed delivery time, staff costs, software, supervision and expected rework. Separate initial setup from recurring work, and define what triggers an extra charge. Compare the proposed fee with the direct cost of serving each customer; the difference still has to cover overheads, taxes and other obligations. Test what happens if clients require more support or leave sooner than expected. A signed renewal at a workable price is more useful evidence than an optimistic revenue forecast.

Turn the idea into a brief

Write down your target customer, proposed service, chosen location and evidence from interviews or a pilot. Include the skills you bring and the operational gaps you need help assessing. Share that brief with Vivo Asia through the enquiry form to discuss your Indonesia business plans. You can begin with an idea: the next useful step is identifying what must be validated before you commit.
